    China has successfully launched its first domestically developed intelligent tunneling machine for steep inclined shafts, marking a significant advancement in tunneling technology. The machine, which completed testing and officially launched in Jiaozuo, Henan Province on January 10, 2025, represents a breakthrough in integrated intelligent equipment for excavating, removing muck (excavated material) and supporting steep inclined shafts.

    An intelligent tunneling machine for steep inclined shafts

    Developed jointly by GD Jinsha River Xulong Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. and Sinohydro Bureau 14, this innovative equipment fills a critical gap in mechanized, intelligent and automated construction for large cross-section steep inclined shafts in China. Xulong Hydropower Station, where the machine is deployed, features four parallel tunnels arranged in a circular cross-section, each utilizing a single tunneling machine. With a maximum excavation diameter of 12.60 meters and a 60-degree incline, the project represents the largest and steepest water diversion tunnel inclined shaft currently under construction in China.

    Designed and built entirely in China, the intelligent tunneling machine for steep inclined shafts is specifically tailored for Xulong Hydropower Station. The machine measures 11 meters in length and 10.25 meters in height, weighs approximately 45 tons, operates on a dual-winch rail system, and features remote intelligent control capabilities. It integrates multiple mechanized construction functions, including drilling, mucking, and anchor rod support, significantly improving the efficiency and safety of steep inclined shaft excavation.

    This successful launch represents a transformative shift from manual to mechanized and intelligent operations in inclined shaft construction. By achieving mechanization, automation and intelligent operation, this advancement promotes technological innovation in the hydropower sector and strengthens China's self-reliance in steep inclined shaft construction technology.
